Welcome to the site and welcome to the first blog post! I’ll give a little introduction since this is new for everyone. My name is Logan and I founded The Herd. I’m a Husband and Dad and proud to be starting this platform as a way to bring strength back to men’s ministry.
The Herd was an idea that I came up with because of questions that I began to ask about the church. As friends of mine would sit around the campfire pondering things God was putting on our hearts, I began to feel pulled in the direction of male motivation to serve, lead, and participate in ministry. As I would look to my right and left during church, I had noticed for a long time that the men weren’t the ones singing during worship, the men weren’t engaged during the sermon, and the men weren’t the ones who made an effort to serve and participate in church activities. For some reason that I can only explain as God’s gentle shove, I was thrusted into positions within my church and community and realized that prior to being in those positions, I was also that same man. I relied heavily on others to carry the church, to preach the gospel, and to see God’s will done in my community. By discovering this realization within myself, I came to understand why these trends were happening.
Motivation
“Be watchful, stand firm in the Faith, act like men, be strong.”
1 Corinthians 16:13
As I turned inward to examine the way I thought about the church I began to realize that maybe there is something men inherently don’t relate to when it comes to our modern church. God created us man and woman, and while that seems to be under question by secular society, its obvious if you ask a handful of men and women what they think about church that we think, find excitement, and focus on different things. In a very informal manner, I conducted my own research by asking men and women what they thought about church in these few simple questions.
What is your favorite part about coming to church?
What is your preferred type of sermon?
What is your preferred type of worship?
Do you volunteer? if so, where?
As I began to informally gather the data, one thing became clear, evangelical church as we know it caters to women. I don’t think its the fault of any one person or a responsibility we should be blaming pastors for, I just think over the years we lost touch with the ways that men connect.
Why The Herd?
As I was praying and researching, I came to realize that every man has a mentor. Whether or not you’ll admit it, you have a mentor here on earth. This mentor might be someone in your church, it might be a coworker, or his name is Joe Rogan, Jocko Willink, Jordan Peterson, or some other influencing voice on the internet.
My goal with The Herd, is to provide resources, community, and opportunity for men to find their way back to our true shepherd. If successful, our desire is to see men of all ages come together in ways that men actually relate and with biblical studies that bring men under the guidance of Christ as their shepherd instead of some worldly authority.
Thank you for reading, thank you for considering, and I thank you in advance for those of you who will come along for the adventure.
